Developers: We warned Apple about iOS maps quality

App developers say they gave Apple plenty of warning about issues with its iOS maps app revamp.

To the casual observer it might appear that Apple was caught off guard by just how bad its in-house maps app was. But the company had plenty of warning.
Developers have been complaining about Apple's Maps since shortly after they were given the first pre-release version in early June, CNET has learned. They say they filed bug requests, sent e-mails to specific Apple employees, and vented on message boards only other developers and Apple could see.
"I posted at least one doomsayer rant after each (developer) beta, and I wasn't alone," a developer with three iOS apps in the App Store told CNET. "The mood amongst the developers seemed to be that the maps were so shockingly bad that reporting individual problems was futile. What was needed wasn't so much an interface for reporting a single point as incorrect, but for selecting an entire region and saying 'all of this -- it's wrong.'"
All of the half dozen developers with whom CNET spoke -- each of whom have applications that rely on Apple's maps technology -- requested that their names and the names of their applications be kept out of this story because of ongoing relationships with the company. But they say the issues were well-documented among developers, who used four pre-release versions of the software before it was given to the public last month.
Apple declined to comment.
Threads on Apple's developer forums described some of the problems that appeared well ahead of the final version of the software, and they still existed when Apple shipped it, these people said. That includes mixed up locations, clouds in satellite imagery, and maps that were less detailed than the ones offered by rival Google, which provided the mapping technology untiliOS 6.
"During the beta period I filed bug reports with Apple's Radar system (notorious for being ignored), posted on the forums several times, and e-mailed multiple people within Apple's MapKit team to voice our concerns," another developer told CNET.
One Apple employee did, in fact, get back to that person who complained, saying that the issue was "well understood," but that there was no news to report on mapping updates. They added that the developer was following the correct procedures for filing their complaints. Nonetheless, the developer told CNET there had been no updates to the bug reports, or extra information on how to deal with issues that were cropping up in apps, leaving them without answers.
"This has been a frustrating experience for us and we don't care where the imagery comes from, we just would like our customers to be able to have the same experience within our app when they update from iOS 5 to iOS 6," the developer added. "Instead, the OS upgrade broke some of the features we built within our application despite being told that only the imagery would be swapped out."

New maps
Apple's change to its own mapping technology were first publicly detailed at the company's annual developers conference in June. It's since been reported that the move was due to a breakdown in negotiations between the two companies, where Google wanted more control and branding of the app, while Apple wanted Google to bring key features like spoken turn-by-turn directions.
Some of the developers CNET spoke to said they didn't fault Apple for wanting to build and control its own software, but lamented that it was seemingly rushed out the door before some of the issues were fixed.
"I think if Apple really wanted to go down this path, then they should have given themselves a year to get everything right," said a developer who makes an application that lets users bookmark locations. "In that time, they could have offered their own maps as the default, but allowed users and developers the option to use Google Maps as an alternative."
What happened instead was that Apple pushed its own software out, with the only alternative to get Google's maps through the browser, where certain features are missing. Google is now rumored to be scrambling to get a standalone maps app replacement ready to go by the end of the year, and is adding new features to its Web app in the meantime.
New work
In an apology two weeks ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook promised improvements while urging users towards alternatives, saying "the more our customers use our Maps the better it will get."
In the meantime, the changeover has been harder for developers to escape. The built-in maps are part of Apple's iOS software developer kit, requiring extra work, and sometimes expense to use alternatives and workarounds inside their applications.
Two developers CNET spoke with said they were at work on changes to their applications to make use of mapping information from Google and Microsoft to offer as an alternative to Apple's built-in solution. A large reason for that was customer response, one of the developers said, adding that more than a third of his support queries since the launch of iOS 6 have been about downgrading back to iOS 5.
"I don't have a great answer unless [customers] did certain technical procedures before upgrading to 6, of which most people don't do those or jailbreak their phone," the developer added. "I would prefer to spend my time on improving something instead of dealing with problems like this. An option would have been nice."
An option is just what another developer said he was working on inside his travel-focused application. While he's still using Apple's maps for showing users search results, he's building in a way to hop out to the Web-based version of Google maps when it comes to helping people drive to those locations.
Others have put together off-the-shelf tools for other developers to use, including a project called GoogleMapsOverlayiOS that replaces Apple's maps with map tiles from Google using a solution that originally tapped the Open Street Maps project.
"I heard a lot of people from countries like (the) U.K, that maps are not good enough in their cities, it's huge problem for people who already have some app in appStore [sic] that's based on Google maps and Google maps API," creator Mladjan Antic says on the project's landing page.

Improvements
For all the doom and gloom, developers say there has been some noticeable improvement with Apple's maps since the product became public. Chief among them: how far users can zoom in on a map, an important consideration for any app that makes use mapping imagery.
Developers say that when the first beta version of iOS 6 was released, the satellite images developers could use could only be zoomed to 17, whereas in iOS 5 it was 19. To put that in perspective, it's like seeing the one-third of theNotre-Dame cathedral in Paris, versus the whole thing while looking at it from above. This week Apple bumped it up to 18 for developers, and 19 within its own maps app. That ends up being a critical distance for apps that used imagery for measurement, or for precise location tracking, one developer said.
Last week consumers also noticed improvements to some locations, including added 3D views, more recent satellite imagery, and fixes to search results. Apple did not put out any official mention or benchmark on how many changes were made, although in its apology note it pledged to "keep working non-stop" on the product.
For developers, as for iPhone users, the improvements can't come fast enough.

Lenovo gets flexible with new Windows 8 laptops

The Chinese PC giant touts "convertibles" during a New York event. No, not cars, but laptops that can be switched into tablets.

NEW YORK -- Lenovo today unveiled several new laptops it hopes will appeal to customers looking for a more tabletlike experience.
During a New York event, the Chinese computer giant, which passed Dell a year ago to become the world's second-biggest PC maker by shipments, introduced four "convertibles" that use Microsoft's new Windows operating system. Such devices -- with names like the IdeaTab Lynxand the IdeaPad Yoga 13 -- twist and transform from notebooks into tablets.
"What people want is flexibility," David Schmoock, Lenovo's president of North America, said in an interview with CNET. "People need, at the end of the day, a fully functioning PC as their primary device. But they also want the flexibility to use a tablet."
The company today unveiled three devices that use Intel chips and run Windows 8. It also demonstrated an 11-inch computer that uses an Nvidia chip and runs Windows RT.
Lenovo expects the devices to help bridge the gap between PCs and tablets. That's important for the company, which has been expanding in the computer market even as rivals look to higher margin areas like business storage products. Lenovo continues to post strong growth, largely dowing to its exposure to China, but it's not completely immune to a slowdown in demand from consumers.
The overall PC market has waned of late as consumers, cautious about the global economy, hold off on PC purchases in favor of mobile devices. IDC in August projected that global PC shipments should rise just 0.9 percent this year. Computer makers are counting on new thin-and-light devices and the introduction of Microsoft's latest Windows software to reinvigorate sales.
Roger Kay, principal analyst at Endpoint Technologies Associates, said Lenovo is hedging its bets with different PC models like convertibles.
"They're trying to cover the gamut of form factors that might succeed," he said. "Lenovo doesn't really know what will win, and neither does anyone else."

Lenovo launched its new devices during an event in New York's Chelsea neighborhood. The launch featured a DJ and several guest appearances, including Anthony Sasso, a Michelin-starred chef. Martin Campbell, the director of "Green Lantern" and "Casino Royale," showed a new commercial filmed to promote Lenovo's devices.
One Windows 8 device, the IdeaPad Yoga 13, will be available exclusively through Best Buy and Lenovo's Web site, with preorders starting October 12 and shipping when Windows launches October 26. Another PC, the ThinkPad Twist, will be available at Staples, other regional retailers, and Lenovo's site starting at the same time.
The Windows RT device, the ThinkPad Yoga 11, will launch in December, as will the IdeaTab Lynx. Executives said the later launch date for the Windows RT device is because it wasn't complete quite as early as the Yoga 13 device, which uses Windows 8 and runs on an Intel chip.
"We have a product readiness cycle, and that particular [Windows RT] product, we felt, was not quite ready," Peter Hortensius, director of Lenovo's global product group, said in an interview with CNET.
He said Lenovo is putting a bigger emphasis on the Yoga 13 in North America and wanted to release it earlier. The Yoga 11, which uses Windows RT and an Nvidia chip, will be pushed more in Asia and will be released there in mid-November, several weeks before its North American launch, he said. The Yoga 13 will be released in Asia about about the same time, Hortensius added.
"Traditionally, Asia always gravitates more to ultraportables," Hortensius said. "North America prefers 14-, 15-, and 16-inch screens."
Microsoft declined to comment.
Convertible devices are nothing new, but they've never really caught on. Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook earlier this year knocked the idea of a MacBook-iPad hybrid device, saying such convergence is a "compromise" to the end user.
"Anything can be forced to converge, but the problem is that products are about trade-offs, and you begin to make trade-offs to the point where what you have left doesn't please anyone," Cook said. "You can converge a toaster and a refrigerator, but those things are probably not going be pleasing to the user."
Still, PC makers hope the new touch capabilities enabled by Windows 8/RT will make convertible devices more appealing to users.
"Once people use touch, they get hooked on that type of experience," Schmoock said.

MacOSX Gets Massive Security Update

This is kinda weird but safe for the users at the same time Apple have just launched the update for the Mac OSX with a severe patchment of 92 vulnerabilities. Well it have also breaked the previous record of the Mac OSX update released last year, when Apple 's largest patched 67 vulnerabilities .

security_mac

The update brings Snow Leopard to version 10.6.3, making this the third major update to the OS that Apple launched in August 2009. Apple also addressed a list of nearly 30 non-security issues in the 10.6.3 update. Leopard users, meanwhile, received only the security patches ..

As a matter of fact, most of the patches were for the QuickTime player for the Leopard OS and it was expected as we have already been knowing many of the Mp4 Zero Day exploitations etc and due to the Pwn2ownage conference the exploits shown there was a big reason for this turn out.

"The sheer number, it's almost so daunting that you don't even want to look," said Andrew Storms, director of security operations at nCircle Network Security.

Today on 30th Apple came out with a update of 42 security fixes which is about the 40% of the total number of the security apple is working onn. The other thing which is kinda in favour of apple is that they don't rate/score there patches like some of the other giants like Microsoft and Oracle.

The other news we got for you is that RSnake and his friends have done some research on this and found some of the exploitations in the safari browser which is regarding the port number float/integer overflow which can cause alot of damage.

Safari-3-2-Update-Crashes-the-Browser-Annoys-the-Users
“Safari has a typical integer overflow in the way they look at ports. So if you add the number 65,536 to the port you want to connect to (in this case 25 + 65,536 = 65,561) you can bypass their port blocking.”

And the best thing to note here is that Apple beat with the blacklist of ports or even whitelist of ports as it can be used in mass exploitation for hackers. Well lets see whats next.

Charlie Miller, the researcher who cracked Snow Leopard's security defenses to take down Safari, said today that Apple had not patched the vulnerability he used last Wednesday.

"New patch doesn't fix pwn2own bug," Miller said via Twitter .
"Sorry suckers, gonna have to wait for the next patch."

“We’re aware of the issue and it is being worked on. Stay tuned for updates.”

An error code of 80150019 have been shown to the users of the Xbox live users. As the users are like not happy with this situation and would be likely as the Microsoft is in problems again.

… Talking about the Hacked account of Major Nelson’s of Xbox Live, Shortly after the hack happened, the Web site Lightzz took credit for the hack, posting a video of it, along with the hacker's Skype name. He is offering to hack other accounts as well.

Well whatever is going we will update this post as soon as Microsoft figures it out is it hacked or connection issues.
